Take a deep breath… can you smell SPRING in the air?

I certainly can, and I’m pretty excited about it! Spring is the perfect time to get outside and move. There’s nothing quite like a run in the crisp spring air – not too hot and not too cold – or even a game of flag football or frisbee outside with friends and family!

It’s also the perfect time to take stock of what’s working (and what’s not!) in your health and fitness routine. Different habits, practices, and routines serve us in different seasons of life, and it’s healthy and normal to drop what no longer serves you with each turn of the seasons. Maybe that early morning HIIT class worked for you during the burst of energy following New Year, but now you’re feeling more drawn to an evening Yoga flow. Maybe lifting heavy was giving you the best results of your life a few years ago, but now you’re feeling more excited about calisthenics.

It’s important to honor your intuition in every iteration of your fitness journey, so pull out a pen and a pad of paper and jot down what you’re taking and leaving behind as the Winter turns to Spring.

Movement of the Month

This time of year is truly my favorite for outdoor movement!

Especially for us Floridians, there’s nothing more fun than an afternoon paddleboarding on the water or an early morning beach yoga session! I already mentioned that this is the perfect time of year to switch up your routines, and one of the easiest ways to do that is to swap indoor activities for outdoor alternatives.

This might look like switching out your 12-2-30 cardio workout for an outdoor hike or a fireside chat with friends for a fun tennis session in the sunshine.

If you’re looking for fun outdoor alternatives to your favorite indoor workouts, check out this informative article from Very Well Fit.

Get Lucky With These St. Patrick’s Day Recipes

Are you celebrating St. Patrick’s Day this year? If so, I’ve got some exciting recipes for you! Even if you’re not hosting or attending any parties, I encourage you to try these delicious and shareable snacks. There’s nothing better than an excuse to cook yummy new foods for yourself and your loved ones!

Oven-Fried Fish Chips

  • Canola or olive oil cooking spray
  • 1 ½ pounds russet potatoes, scrubbed and cut into ¼inch-thick wedges
  • 1 ½ teaspoons Cajun or Creole seasoning divided
  • 2 cups cornflakes
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 2 large egg whites, beaten
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 pound cod, or haddock, cut into 4 portions

  1. Position racks in upper and lower third of oven; preheat to 425 degrees F. Coat a large baking sheet with cooking spray. Set a wire rack on another large baking sheet; coat with cooking spray.
  2. Place potatoes in a colander. Thoroughly rinse with cold water, then pat dry completely with paper towels. Toss the potatoes, oil and ¾ teaspoon Cajun (or Creole) seasoning in a large bowl. Spread on the baking sheet without the rack. Bake on the lower oven rack, turning every 10 minutes, until tender and golden, 30 to 35 minutes.
  3. Meanwhile, coarsely grind cornflakes in a food processor or blender or crush in a sealable plastic bag. Transfer to a shallow dish. Place flour, the remaining ¾ teaspoon Cajun (or Creole) seasoning and salt in another shallow dish and egg whites in a third shallow dish. Dredge fish in the flour mixture, dip it in egg white and then coat all sides with the ground cornflakes. Place on the prepared wire rack. Coat both sides of the breaded fish with cooking spray.
  4. Bake the fish on the upper oven rack until opaque in the center and the breading is golden brown and crisp, about 20 minutes.

Whipped Shamrock Shake

  • 1 cup vanilla ice cream (regular or nondairy)
  • 1 cup low-fat milk
  • ¼ teaspoon peppermint extract
  • 1-2 drops natural green food coloring
  • Whipped cream, fresh mint sprigs and sprinkles for garnish

  1. Place ice cream, milk, peppermint extract and food coloring in a blender. Blend until smooth.
  2. Pour into 2 tall glasses and top with whipped cream, fresh mint sprigs and/or sprinkles, if desired.
