Summer is the perfect time to challenge yourself to become a healthier, happier version of you. We have some great tips in this newsletter about how you can make this happen, including a new exercise of the month.
Exercise of the Month: Single-Leg Deadlift and Row
If you’re looking for a versatile exercise, search no further. A single-leg deadlift engages your hamstrings, core and glutes while a row works both your shoulders and triceps. Combine the two moves, and you’ll create a total body strength exercise and work on your balance. Here’s what to do:
- Stand with a weight in each hand.
- Put your weight on one leg and leave your other leg slightly bent behind you for stability.
- Keep your core engaged, back flat and chest forward.
- Slowly lower your upper body down toward the floor, lowering the weights toward your shins.
- Feel the stretch in your glutes and hamstrings as you near the bottom of the move.
- Drop your upper body until it’s parallel to the floor.
- As you lower your torso toward the floor, do a row with the weights in your hands: Squeeze your shoulder blades together, bringing the weights up and back until your arms form a 90-degree angle. Keep the weights near your ribcage.
If you’re a beginner, practice just the deadlift movement and the bent-over row movement separately before combining them. You can also try hanging onto a chair when you do the exercise for stability. Another variation is to keep both feet flat on the floor instead of using the single-leg approach.
If you’re advanced, try lifting your back supporting leg off the floor as you lower into the deadlift. Squeeze your glutes and try to form a straight line from head to toe.
