Health and Wellness for Back-to-School Season

The school supply sales have already started in stores. It won’t be long now before kids are back in school again and everyone’s schedule gets a little bit busier. To help you make the most of the busy back-to-school season, we’ve put together a guide for how to infuse healthy habits and active wellness into your life.

Exercise of the Month: 30-Minute Cardio

This time of year, you have to make your exercise routine work for you. What about seizing the opportunity to get 30 minutes of cardio from walking the kids to school or their bus stop? Or once you’ve dropped the kids off at school, you could ride your bike for 30 minutes, walk the bridge, walk the beach or walk around Marina Jack.

Your goal should be to get 30 minutes of cardio five times a week. That’s easy when you make it work for your schedule.

There are so many benefits of doing cardio workouts — it burns fat, it helps you lose weight, it improves your heart health, it increases your lung capacity, it helps you sleep better and it can help you reduce stress. So what are you waiting for? Step outside and get moving!

Delicious Treats for Back to School

Just because back-to-school time is busy, it doesn’t mean that’s an excuse to eat food that’s not good for you and your family. This is a great opportunity to try some new healthy recipes.

Breakfast can be a particularly stressful time of day as you try to get your kids out the door before school. Make the morning a little easier by whipping up some Healthy Baked Oatmeal Cups the night before. Here’s how to make them:

Wisk together the following ingredients:

  • ½ cup mashed bananas
  • ¼ cup all-natural nut butter
  • ½ cup almond milk
  • Chia “egg” (combine 1 tablespoon chia seeds and 3 tablespoons water, whisk and let sit)
  • 1 ½ cups old-fashioned oats
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup dark chocolate chips

Bake the whisked mixture in a muffin tin for about 15 minutes on 350 degrees. Then top with your favorite toppings, like nonfat plain Greek yogurt, maple syrup or berries and eat them up for a calmer, more nutritious morning.

For an after-school snack, try these scrumptious No Bake Protein Brownie Bites. Here’s how you make them:

Combine the following ingredients in your food processor:

  • ½ cup old-fashioned oats
  • ½ cup Bob’s Red Mill Chocolate Protein Powder Nutritional Booster
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder
  • ¼ cup almond butter
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • ¼ cup almond milk

Pulse the ingredients together until a ball forms. Add 1/3 cup vegan mini chocolate chips. Pulse again until combined. Roll into balls. Enjoy!
